Recent Controversy
The Fountain of the Pioneers is a subject of controversy because of the different ways it has been interpreted. Some people believe is a representation of the local history, or a call to not forget the local Native Americans forced from their homes. Critics claim it is an image of white superiority, a celebration of expanding west. In looking closely at the fountain, details emerge that call into question the meaning of the fountain and what Iannelli was trying to express through his design.
